3 Important Piano Care Tips

by Samu Koskela

There are many reasons to purchase a piano. Maybe you love music and want to brush up on your piano-playing skills. Or you bought a piano because your children want to take lessons. Whatever the reason, a piano is a great addition to your home. Now that you have made such a wonderful investment, you'll want to do everything you can to take care of your piano. Here are three important piano care tips that will ensure your piano lasts for many years.

1. Avoid High Humidity Levels In the Home

One of the most damaging things to a piano is high humidity. If humidity levels in the home are too high, it could cause the intricate wooden and felt parts inside that piano to swell. When this swelling occurs, the hammer action of the piano could become sluggish, which will cause the piano keys to stick.

High humidity could also cause some of the interior parts to rust. Extreme changes in humidity can also be problematic for pianos. If the humidity levels change drastically, it could cause damage to the wood. To protect your piano, you'll want to keep moderate and unchanging humidity levels in your home.

2. Clean Your Piano on a Regular Basis

To protect your piano from dust and dirt, you should clean your piano on a regular basis. When you clean the surface of your piano, be sure to use a soft cloth or feather duster. You may not be able to wax or polish your piano, as this could do more harm than good.

You'll also want to use a soft cloth to clean the keyboard on the piano. If you need to wipe debris from the keys, use a neutral detergent. You should avoid using rubbing alcohol on any part of the piano. To keep the keyboard in the best condition possible, the piano player should always wash their hands first.

3. Keep Your Piano In Tune

You always want your piano to sound its best, which is why piano tuning is also an important part of piano care. Besides making your piano sound good, piano tuning can prevent the strings inside the piano from breaking. When a piano gets tuned, the string tension is corrected, which makes it vibrate in harmony with the other strings.

You'll know it's time for piano tuning when the piano sounds flat or the key makes an odd sound when you strike it. If you have had your piano for a while and it has never been tuned, it's probably a good idea to contact a piano tuning service.
