Prepare For Your First Piano Lesson

by Samu Koskela

For many people, learning to play the piano is a bucket list item. After all, who would not want to learn how to play one of the most popular instruments? When you take piano lessons with a professional, you can learn how to play the instrument gracefully. If you are nervous about your first lesson, you should take these tips into account. They will help you prepare for your very first lesson.

Discuss Book Options With Your Teacher

One of the first things you should do is discuss the potential books your teacher may use to teach you. He or she may have specific books they prefer using, and you may need to purchase your own book to practice at home.

Pay Closer Attention to Music

Now is the perfect time to begin listening to your favorite music with the intent of hearing it in a new light. Tune in to your favorite songs in search of beats and rhythm, trying to tap your foot to the beat and keep time as if you were playing the music as well.

Exercise Those Fingers

Your fingers are like any other part of your body. They need exercise to be at their most nimble and quick. Practice laying your hands on a flat surface and then lifting each finger, one at a time. Practice each day to allow your fingers to strengthen and develop more dexterity.

Start Learning Where the Keys Are

Middle C is your starting point when you learn to play. The notes you need to know first will be centered around that C, so it is a good idea that you begin practicing where your hands will sit and which note is which. Some people prefer to place temporary labels on their piano or keyboard while they learn the ropes and gauge where each key is.

Set Some Goals

When you come to piano class, your instructor may ask that you have some ideas of what you want to do. Why are you trying to learn to play? Do you have favorite songs you hope to play? Do you want to compose your own music? Your instructor may be able to cater your lessons to your goals and needs.

Now that you have a better understanding of what to expect for your first piano lesson, you can walk into your lesson prepared. With this information, you simply cannot go wrong. Good luck!
